Social media queen Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) used her Twitter platform to defend journalists amid a sequence of sweeping layoffs throughout the media trade.
In a Saturday tweet, the freshman congresswoman cautioned that “the most important threats to journalism proper now are tech monopolies & focus of possession,” advocating for “high-quality journalism.”
With no variety of reports shops, she warned, “our democracy will proceed to crumble.”
The tweet comes within the wake of latest cutbacks at HuffPost, Yahoo, AOL, BuzzFeed and a handful of Gannett-owned newspapers ― all advised, some 1,000 employees misplaced their jobs.
Fb and Google have been extensively blamed for monopolizing internet advertising, which critics have pointed to as a serious handicap to digital information organizations making an attempt to show a revenue to remain afloat.
In a follow-up tweet, Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her protection of journalists, arguing the career “will solely die if we select to not battle for it ― and if journalism dies, our democracy will, too.”
